This project focuses on using temperature and humidity sensors to better understand how environmental conditions affect sea turtle development. Since nest temperature plays a major role in determining the sex of hatchlings, the team is studying how hatchery roofs influence sand temperatures and overall nest conditions. Through special permission, the Hermosa hatchery contains both covered and uncovered sections, allowing researchers to compare the two environments and evaluate the effectiveness of hatchery shading. The team is currently building and testing the sensor system, which consists of sensors housed in PVC pipes that collect temperature and humidity readings every hour. The data will be transmitted to a central hub and uploaded to a cloud-based database for long-term monitoring and analysis. By comparing data from multiple sensor locations, researchers hope to better understand how climate change is affecting sea turtle nests and identify ways to improve hatchery management and conservation efforts.
